I received a notice in the mail about a mandatory appointment and I saw on the form that I can do the appointment in person or over the phone so I call them and ask for a interview over the phone for the upcoming appointment and I was told I must have a physical disability for it to be over the phone which isn't true because last year I was able to do my phone appointment over the phone. I have an intellectual disability and I need someone with me which isn't possible because my mom is in a walker my mom must be on the phone near me to explain things to me
It sounds like you are facing an accessibility issue. Here are some steps you can take:
- Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA): Under the ADA, you have the right to reasonable accommodations, including intellectual disabilities.
- Request Accommodation in Writing: Submit a written request explaining your need for a phone interview due to your intellectual disability and your mom's mobility issues.
- Contact the Office: If they refuse, ask to speak to a supervisor or the ADA coordinator.

Subject: Request for Reasonable Accommodation for Phone Interview
Dear [Name of Office/Department],
I am writing to formally request a reasonable accommodation under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) for my upcoming appointment scheduled on [Date of Appointment]. I have an intellectual disability, and I require the assistance of my mother during the interview. Due to her mobility issues, it is not feasible for us to attend the appointment in person.
Last year, I was able to complete my appointment over the phone without any issues. I kindly request the same accommodation this year for a phone interview. This would allow me to fully participate and understand the proceedings with the necessary support from my mother.
Please let me know if you need any additional information or documentation to process this request. I appreciate your understanding and prompt attention to this matter.
Sincerely,
