Well lets get into it, Im a minor (*). Recently, within the last year, I was voluntarily admitted to a mental hospital in Iowa (Clive behavioral health). During my time in Clive I was generally treated with good care but there are several issues of concern. About halfway through my stay at Clive (a time of * and */2 months)
****, you seem to have valid concerns regarding your rights. Iowa Code * does indeed provide for legal representation if a patient feels mistreated. Here’s a brief rundown:
- Visitation Rights: If the decree states your mom has access, it should be honored.
- Legal Representation: You have the right to a lawyer if mistreated.
- Misinformation: Continuous lying can be legally challenged.
Would you like to know how to proceed with these concerns legally?
I was denied the ability to continue visitation with my mother. The alleged reason behind this revokal of visitation was the fact that my mom and dad are divorced and my dad has sole legal custody. My mom still has her rights to me and still maintains visitation. In the most recent copy/modification of the decree, it states that my mother still has access tomy medical and education. Yet the hospital stopped my visitation with my mother and any member on her side of the family, even though she is still considered a legal guardian.
****, it sounds like you have a strong case. Here are a few key points:
- Iowa Legal Code * provides you the right to legal representation if you believe you are being mistreated inside a facility.
- Your mother's visitation rights and access to your medical and educational information should be respected as per the decree.

At the time of this happening, I was continually lied to about the reasons behind it, I was even told that "I simply didn't have visitors" even though they were there. During this time I continuously asked to consult with a legal representative. My mother who again has legal rights to me, also requested that I be provided with legal representation. I was continuously denied this right and was also told I did not have the right to access a lawyer, per Iowa Legal Code *, I have the right to a lawyer if I believe that I am being mistreated inside the facility. Another of the things that happened was the continuous lying, I was not only told that I didn't have visitors but I was also told that I would be able to talk to the CEO, I was on many occasions promised he would visit to discuss the matters further but he never showed up.
****, it sounds like your rights under Iowa Legal Code * have been violated. You may have a strong case for legal action.
