I live in California, in an unsecured building. There has been homeless people in my alley that lead up to my stairs. I want to install a ring camera. My landlord approved it. I installed it. It faces my horrible neighbors. But you can only see their front door. Not inside their apartment. The neighbors say it’s against their privacy rights. By the way the neighbors break the law and smoke pot in my stairs in front of my apartment. I already caught that on camera. My question is can I legally install the ring camera?
Hello ****. In California, it's generally legal to install a security camera facing a neighbor's property if it's only capturing areas where there's no "reasonable expectation of privacy." Here, focus is on the public front door. However, it's a grey area when it comes to privacy law. Always best to consult a local attorney.
