I want to know why the state of New Jersey is going after me with an unemployment overpayment after 25 years saying that I did it and didn't report it. But yet I got a letter 25 years ago saying I didn't have to pay this when I appealed it the first time I don't have that letter anymore. It's been 25 years
Hello ****. This sounds like a complicated situation. It could be due to a potential statute of limitations issue or a miscommunication. Did you receive any recent correspondence that provides a reason for this renewed claim?
Now they're saying there's no letter and that I have to pay it back
Hello ****. In New Jersey:
- The statute of limitations for collecting debt is generally 6 years.
- However, for state debts like unemployment overpayments, they can pursue collection indefinitely.
You may need legal advice to understand your options and rights.
Well I don't have any money to obtain legal advice
