University Financial Hold Dispute
Summary
If youre facing a financial hold at Walden University due to PTSD and the impact of Hurricane Helene, you may have grounds for a complaint under the ADA. The university is required to provide reasonable accommodations for disabilities and ensure equal access to education. Filing a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR) can prompt an investigation and potentially lead to a resolution. Gather documentation of your PTSD, the natural disasters impact, and any correspondence with the university. Consider consulting a local attorney for personalized advice and assistance with the complaint process. Outcomes vary, but many students achieve favorable resolutions.Full Conversation
I'm having a big issue with my current school. Walden University; I'm getting an MBA there but I'm currently on a hold... A financial "hold". I am so upset and feel as if my rights are being violated! I've been suffering from paralyzing symptoms from PTSD, I often have triggers and I'm working with * therapists to get well. Plus, I wasn't able to complete all of my credits for my last term because my community and where I live was hit horribly by Hurricane Helene - a FEMA NATURAL DISASTER! I had no electricity no running water for nearly *-12 days! If I would have been able to have access to internet I would have completed everything! Now they're telling me I owe $*,* to remove this hold because they sent my financial aid back!!! This is so wrong!
Hi ****, that sounds really stressful.
Have you tried contacting your school's financial aid office to explain your situation and see if they can offer any assistance or appeal the decision? They might have special considerations for natural disasters and medical issues.

Of course I have... This is what they say; first they send threatening messages that they're going to report to collections if I don't pay. I'm going through so much right now. Dental work, paying for therapy, I had to take std from my job in order to get help. Please read what the office of the president said... Her email :
Hi ****, that sounds incredibly challenging. Can you share what the office of the president at Walden University said in their email? This will help me understand the situation better and provide more specific guidance.
Hello ****,
We understand that you've faced unforeseen circumstances, and we can only imagine how difficult this may be. Unfortunately, we do not have any additional funding suggestions beyond what we discussed. You have been working with your academic coach to submit a tuition waiver, and you will need to wait for the waivers team to provide you with an update. Please keep in mind that the financial department will typically send out notices regarding student accounts as part of their standard procedure.
In the meantime, we recommend reaching out to Financial Account Mangement for any concerns you may have about your account while you await the outcome of your tuition waiver.
Kind Regards,
April

But what about being protected by the ADA I mean I watched my father get killed and I have severe PTSD and I’ve had a lot of struggles these past couple of years and I’ve always been a good student but this time at school has just been very difficult and I’ve got the documentation to prove it. I mean, I feel like having been a victim of a FEMA declared disaster where my neighbors died. Homes were obliterated, and there is still remnants of that terrible storm that has been the worst South Carolina Carolina has ever seen. I would think there would be some kind of mandate in order to protect me but these assholes already had $*,* in my account and instead of releasing it they sent it back to the federal Financial Aid that I freaking got along with a plus loan that I applied for and Got!

****, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) does provide protections for individuals with disabilities, including PTSD. Under the ADA, schools must provide reasonable accommodations to ensure that students with disabilities have equal access to education.
Here are a few steps you can take:
- Formal Complaint: File a formal complaint with the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR) if you believe your rights under the ADA have been violated.
- Legal Assistance: Contact a local disability rights organization or legal aid for further support.

Under what specific grounds I need to be able to back it up with specific walls and regulatory violations that they’ve committed against me. I mean they’ve treated me absolutely unfairly and I’ve got emails stating that they’re gonna do everything they can to help. They haven’t done a damn thing. This has been since freaking December. Now they’re threatening me to report $*,* to a collections which would absolutely ruin my credit. And that is unacceptable.

Yes, what else can I do because I also suffered a traumatic job loss during this time… as I just have been going through a really difficult terrible time, but I’m not a victim. I just had some things in my life that happened. I have grown. I have learned and I am a better person for it. I’m not looking for a handout and they’re treating me as such. I just wanna go back to school and finish and I’m tired of waiting. They haven’t given a damn about me, they haven’t bothered to reach out or do anything. And I’m tired of it. What will this complaint essentially do?

Yes, I wanna know why it is acceptable for them to essentially utilize the plus loan which I had to apply for with my credit and I was awarded. How was it there decision what to do with those funds considering it was my loan and my money. Because now I will have to reapply and another hard pull on my credit, and another dip in my credit score because of their stupidity they had * grand in my account and they sent it all back

*-*-* *, **** Mitchell lemitchell@outlook.com the case is regarding discriminatory actions because of “failure to beat academic standards from my last term” therefore, they placed a hold on my account, returned all of my funds which included a plus loan I had to take out in my name and for my credit, and they just sent it all back. Now they’re saying in order to remove the hold I owe them $*,*. They keep threatening me with collection and report reporting it to my credit, which would absolutely ruin me. They promised that they would help with the FEMA declare disaster of hurricane Helene exactly the time that the term was ending and my area had no electricity running water for 11 days. I have severe PTSD and if I had power during that time, the work would’ve gotten completed. Nobody cares they don’t bother to do anything to help and I’m so done with these people.
