Summary
In Michigan, service of process for a PPO is typically done by an officer or authorized individual. If the service seems questionable, verify with the Kent County Sheriffs Department. To file a motion to adjourn your hearing date, complete a Motion to Adjourn form, file it with the court clerk, and serve a copy to the petitioner or their attorney. Consulting a local attorney for guidance on your PPO termination motion is advisable.Full Conversation
- PPO filed against me, and was signed by a judge and effective as of */*/*
Hello ****, I understand your situation. Could you please provide me with your location so I can provide the most accurate information?
- jurisdiction: state of Michigan, 17th Kent Circuit Court. I was "served" with the papers on Monday, May * *. However, I am unable to locate the case online. There is nothing in the 17th Kent Circuit court case search relating to this. Due to that, yesterday (May *, *), I visited the county clerk. I was able to retrieve * documents relating to the case. One item that caught my eye was that the Kent County Sheriff Department was selected as the servicing entity. The individual who served me did not identify themselves as an officer. I guess in theory it would be possible for the Sheriff Department to send the service order to a different service processor, but this whole thing smells "fishy" to me. There was no service acknowledgement filed yesterday when I pulled documents related to the case, and then I called the county clerk office today and they said they still don't see service acknowledgement filed. They transferred me to the PPO office to check with them directly, and I have yet to hear back.
