Yes our landlord neglected repair and we withheld rent and he in return took us to court for non payment and wants us out before May 3rd. We have no place to go
In Michigan, tenants are allowed to withhold rent when landlords neglect repairs. However, there are steps to follow:
- Notify the landlord in writing about the necessary repairs.
- If neglected, deposit your monthly rent with the court.
- Request a trial to determine if rent withholding was justified.
You may need legal representation. If you can't afford, search for legal aid in your area.

I'm sorry to hear about your situation. If Legal Aid was unable to assist, you may want to try contacting other local nonprofit organizations or pro bono programs. Alternatively, a law school clinic in Michigan may offer free or low-cost legal advice.
