i need to sue my landlord in carroll county md for displacing me and evicting me just because the house had structural issues that were expensive for my landlord to repair
Hi Jonathan, you may have a strong case. Here are some general points on landlord-tenant law in Maryland:
- Landlords must maintain rental properties in a habitable condition.
- Retaliatory evictions, like evicting a tenant due to high repair costs, are usually prohibited.
- Tenants can potentially seek damages for wrongful eviction.
Have you documented the eviction notice and any communication regarding the structural issues?
the eviction notice was in the form of a printed email so I dont think it was filed with a court and the notice said the house had structural issues and black mold that would cost them too much to repair and we had to get out in 30 days(we had lived there for about eight years so moving was not easy at all)
Hi Jonathan, it seems you might have a valid claim for wrongful eviction. Here are some relevant points:
- In Maryland, landlords must provide a habitable living environment.
- Eviction due to repair costs can be considered retaliatory.
- Documentation of the notice and communication is crucial.
Have you consulted with a local attorney yet?

Hi Jonathan, I'm really sorry to hear about your situation. While you may be able to sue your landlord for wrongful eviction and damages, suing for the turmoil caused by your current living conditions at the shelter may be more complicated. Generally:
- Landlords can be held liable for wrongful eviction.
- Emotional distress claims are complex and require strong evidence.
Have you considered reaching out to a local legal aid organization for advice on your specific circumstances?
i havent contacted them yet..
