Landlord Utility Billing Dispute
Summary
In Missouri, landlords are generally required to provide water unless the lease specifies otherwise. If the lease does not mention utility payments, you may have grounds to contest the landlords decision to split the water bill equally, especially given the uneven number of tenants in each unit. Consider reviewing your lease for any clauses related to utility payments and discussing the issue with your landlord. If necessary, you may want to draft a formal letter to address the unfair division of the water bill.Full Conversation
I’m having an issue with my landlord and could use some advice. Up to now, the landlord paid the water bill since there was only one meter and no real way to determine which duplex used how much water/sewer. Now, the new owner wants the tenants to pay the water bill. But, he wants me to pay half and the other side pay half. Problem is, I’m the only tenant in my side and there are * next door. I think that’s totally unfair and he’s so far, not budging. Surely, he can’t legally charge me half. Am I wrong or is he?
Hey Lesa! That does sound frustrating. In Missouri, landlords are required to provide water unless your lease specifies otherwise.
- Check Your Lease: See if there's any mention of utility payments.
- Unfair Division: You might have grounds to argue that the division is unfair, especially given the uneven number of tenants.
