My boyfriend and I have been renting a home for the last year. We are both co-tenants on the lease. The property manager sent us the lease renewal for another year, which would go into effect on Monday. My boyfriend has already signed it, but I haven’t. My boyfriend decided yesterday he doesn’t want to live there anymore, and he says he still has the option to not renew despite signing the lease renewal because I haven’t signed it yet so it isn’t “formally done”, and because our current lease isn’t up yet and the new one hasn’t taken effect yet. Is this correct?
Hello ****, could you please tell me which country you're located in? The rules regarding lease renewal can differ greatly depending on your location.

Hello ****,
In South Carolina:
- If both co-tenants are required to sign the lease for it to be valid, and one hasn't, it's still not effective.
- However, if your boyfriend officially communicated his intent to renew, this could potentially be binding.
It's best to consult with a local attorney for advice specific to your situation.
