I live on the 2nd floor of a *-floor rooming house, with * roommates, in the Dorchester section of Boston, Massachusetts. I got an email from my landlord earlier this week saying that due to dramatic increase of property tax, insurance and other maintenance cost, he will rent the living room in the apartment out. He also said that in this way, he does not have to increase each tenant's monthly rent. He told me to take any personal stuff in the living room away by May 20th. Is it legal for him to do this?
