Found Stray Dog Legalities

Summary

Under North Carolina law, a finder of lost property must seek the true owner. If the owner doesnt claim the pet within a reasonable time, you may have rights. Document your efforts to find the owner and any expenses incurred. Not surrendering a found pet isnt typically a criminal offense, but if the original owners press charges for theft, it could become a legal issue. Consult a local lawyer for detailed advice.

I found a stray dog on the side of the road, I took this dog to a vet that happened to not have a chip reader however, he told me it was highly unlikely she had a chip because from the way she looked he said she had been abandoned multiple years ago. She had to be given antibiotics at the vet because there were many cuts on her body that had gotten infected. She is a 4 year old siberian husky. 6 months later i took her to get her shots updated and the vets told me she has a chip and they are contacting the owners. Do i have a case?
