Pet Custody Legal Rights

Summary

Pet custody disputes can arise when someone cares for a friends pet for an extended period. In California, pet ownership is typically determined by who has legal title to the animal. However, if you have been the primary caregiver for the dog for over a year, you may have grounds to claim ownership. Factors such as who pays for the pets expenses, veterinary care, and daily needs can influence the decision. It is advisable to discuss the situation with your friend and possibly seek legal advice to formalize the transfer of ownership.
