Law Enforcement Communication Protocols

Summary

In Tennessee, law enforcement officers should properly identify themselves when contacting individuals or their family members. They can share information about active warrants, but privacy laws vary by state. Its not a HIPAA violation for law enforcement to share legal information with family members. However, the use of personal cell phones for such communication may be a breach of protocol.

Are law officers allowed to call family members and tell them any information about anything legal you may have going on?!? Like is it legal or illegal for a officer at law to call my parent off his personal cell phone and tell them I have so many warrants, explain to them what's going on, or ask them questions about me?
What state are you located in? This will help me provide the most accurate information regarding your privacy rights and law enforcement communication protocols.
Tennessee
What specific information did the officer share with your parents? In general, law enforcement can share information about active warrants, but privacy laws vary by state.
Both times he has called he has called off his personal cell phone number, not a work related number, but the first time he spoke to anyone he explained to them the legal matter of what was going on with me then asked them "so he says" that they didn't know nothing about it right?!? Then proceeds to tell them everything about the whole matter, then the second time he has called now again off his personal cell phone, he tells them I was supposed to have turned myself in a couple different times now, which is NOT true I only agreed to "meet with him one time" as he didn't tell me at first it was a warrant but they he just wanted to talk to me but, I didn't make it due to my car being messed up, then he also tells them the second time that I have four warrants put for me and what the warrants was for an stuff like that
Did the officer identify himself and his department when he called your parents? This could be important in determining if there was a breach of protocol.
I believe so, "I believe he said this is officer whatever his name is calling from the Columbia police department, I am calling you off my personal cell phone number so you can reach back out to me at anytime on this number if you need to.. (That's what he said to me at least)
Did the officer provide any proof of his identity or affiliation with the Columbia police department when he called?
No, he just stated his name and that he was an officer from the Columbia police department.. He never gave a badge number or anything like that if that's what your asking
Did your parents ask for any proof of his identity or affiliation with the Columbia police department when he called?

In Tennessee, law enforcement officers should identify themselves properly when contacting individuals or their family members.
I'm not sure, I just believe it is against my rights and also against HIPPA to call anyone and state anything especially anything that is a legal matter at this time, stating my name giving my information out about what's going on and stuff like that ect ect
Is not against a HIPPA violation to call anyone (family members or not) and release any information about my legal issues that are going on
